5 Affordable Date Spots In Penang Under RM50
5 Min Read

Not every date in Penang needs to end with a painful bank notification.

Sometimes the best dates are just good food, random conversations, sea breeze, and walking around without rushing anywhere. The nice thing about Penang is there are still plenty of places where you can spend quality time together without accidentally spending RM120 on coffee and pasta.

So if you’re planning something chill, low-pressure, and wallet-friendly, here are a few affordable Penang date ideas that can easily stay under RM50 for two people.

Perfect for students, young couples, or anyone trying to survive until payday.

1. Sunset Walk at Straits Quay + Ice Cream

There’s something oddly comforting about Straits Quay in the evening.

It’s slower compared to the busier Penang spots, and the sea breeze does half the work for the date already. You can walk along the marina, sit by the waterfront, and casually people-watch while pretending you both totally know about yachts.

Grab ice cream or coffee nearby and keep things simple.

Estimated Spend:

  • Ice cream or drinks: RM20–RM35 for two

Why It Works:

  1. Relaxed atmosphere
  2. No pressure to “plan activities”
  3. Nice for conversations
  4. Free sunset included

MetroPeek Tip:

Go around 6:30PM for cooler weather and softer sunset lighting. Also… less sweating during conversations is always a win.

2. Hin Bus Depot + Casual Cafe Hopping

If both of you enjoy artsy spaces, random conversations, and taking photos of walls for Instagram, Hin Bus Depot is an easy choice.

The area has a very casual creative vibe, especially during weekends when the market is happening. Even if you don’t buy much, it’s fun to walk around, browse local vendors, and discover small snacks together.

After that, hop into one of the nearby cafes for coffee or dessert.

Estimated Spend:

  • Drinks + small dessert: RM25–RM45 for two

Why It Works:

  1. Feels lively without being chaotic
  2. Easy to spend time without rushing
  3. Plenty of nearby cafes within walking distance
  4. Good daytime date option

MetroPeek Tip:

Weekend afternoons can get quite hot. Earlier mornings or evening hours feel much nicer if you plan to walk around.

3. Evening Walk at Gurney Bay

If you just want a simple date without overplanning everything, Gurney Bay is honestly one of the easiest options right now.

You can take a slow walk by the seaside, sit together near the open areas, grab drinks nearby, and just enjoy the evening atmosphere. It’s especially nice when the weather cools down a little and the crowd starts coming in for walks, cycling, or casual lepak sessions.

It feels very local not overly polished, but comfortable enough for a relaxed evening out.

Estimated Spend:

  • Drinks or light snacks: RM10–RM25

Why It Works:

  1. Free and easy date idea
  2. Nice sea breeze in the evening
  3. Plenty of spots to sit and chat
  4. Good for low-pressure conversations

MetroPeek Tip:

Weekday evenings are usually more relaxed compared to weekends. If possible, go after sunset when the weather is cooler and the whole area feels more comfortable for walking around.

4. Dessert Date at ChinaHouse

Now before anyone says “ChinaHouse expensive lah,” hear us out.

You don’t actually need a full meal here. Sharing cake and drinks can still fit under budget if you keep it simple.

The place itself has a charming old Penang atmosphere with connected spaces, artsy corners, and cozy lighting that makes conversations feel a bit more special without trying too hard.

Estimated Spend:

  • Cake slices + drinks: RM35–RM50

Why It Works:

  1. Cozy atmosphere
  2. Good for evening dates
  3. Feels slightly fancy without becoming scary-expensive
  4. Cake portions are generous enough to share

MetroPeek Tip:

Go during quieter weekday evenings if possible. Weekends can get crowded fast, especially around dessert hours.

5. Botanical Gardens + Breakfast Date

Morning dates are underrated.

Penang Botanical Gardens is actually a pretty nice option if both of you prefer quieter dates away from crowds and traffic. You can take a slow walk, enjoy the greenery, and then head for breakfast nearby afterward.

Simple? Yes.
Effective? Also yes.

Estimated Spend:

  • Breakfast + drinks nearby: RM20–RM40

Why It Works:

  1. Calm and low-stress
  2. Great for conversations
  3. Healthy-ish date idea
  4. Good alternative to cafe-only dates

MetroPeek Tip:

Go early before the weather turns into Penang’s usual “free sauna experience.”

Affordable Dates Usually End Up Being More Fun Anyway

Honestly, some of the best dates aren’t the expensive ones.

It’s usually the random conversations during walks, sharing desserts, arguing over where to eat next, or sitting somewhere with absolutely no plan after dinner.

Penang is actually pretty good for this kind of slower, casual dating. You don’t need a luxury rooftop dinner to have a good time here.

Sometimes RM50, decent company, and good food already enough.
